The Benefits of Stepping Outside and Connecting with Nature: Reflection- It might be time to go outside and touch some grass
Updated: Oct 29
Public Service Announcement:
A busy routine can turn into one long stretch indoors, moving from one screen to the next. This is a personal reminder to pause, look around, and make room for an ordinary outdoor moment.
If you've been arguing with strangers online for three hours, convinced your cousin's Facebook posts are a personal attack, or you've started a sentence with "Back in my day..." five times before noon—It might be time to go outside and touch some grass.
Seriously.
Grass doesn't argue.
Grass doesn't care who won the debate.
Grass isn't judging your outfit, your opinions, or your life choices.
Sometimes a welcome break from stress is a pause from another podcast, another conspiracy theory, or another heated comment section. It can be sunshine on your face, a breeze in your hair, and the reminder that
the world is much bigger than your phone screen.
Sit on the porch.
Take a walk.
Smell some flowers.
Wave at a neighbor.
And if you accidentally discover birds have been singing this whole time, congratulations—you've officially rejoined society.
Touching grass isn't giving up. It's recharging. Because a peaceful mind grows where fresh air flows.
Now log off for a minute. The grass misses you.
Try a Small Outdoor Reset
Put the phone down for a few minutes and choose a place where you feel comfortable: a porch, a garden chair, or a familiar path. You do not need a perfect view or a long walk. Sitting and noticing what is around you counts.
Pick one thing to pay attention to. Watch a leaf move, listen for birds, or notice the colors in a planter. Let that be enough for a moment instead of turning the break into another task to finish.
When you return, ask yourself: what deserves my attention now? Maybe the comment can wait. Maybe the next useful thing is a glass of water, a kind conversation, or a little quiet. A pause does not solve every problem, but it can give you room to choose your next response.
Choose a safe, comfortable time and place, especially in hot weather. This reflection is about making space in the day, rather than promising a medical result.
